Heavy Periods: Is My Flow Too Heavy?

Many women have heavy periods. When the period becomes too heavy it can signal a problem (medically known as menorrhagia). Heavy periods can be a symptom of many conditions. But the question remains – how can you tell if your heavy period is actually abnormally heavy?

Unfortunately, this question is not easily answered and does require a trip to your medical care professional. However, let’s take a look at some of the more well known symptoms associated with abnormally heavy periods.

Note: Please discuss with your medical care professional if you are concerned about your menstrual health. They are your best resource and will be able to provide you with additional information.

Frequently Changing Your…
Changing your tampon/pad or emptying your menstrual cup too frequently throughout the day may be a clue that you have a very heavy flow. Menstrual cups can be worn up to 12 hours, but if you find you’re emptying yours every 2 – 3 hours, it might be time to take a trip to the doctors.

Measure Your Flow
Concerned you may be bleeding too much? Measure your flow. If you’re using a menstrual cup, measuring your flow is easy as menstrual cups do not absorb the flow but collect it. You can take your findings back to your doctor to discuss your flow, how heavy it is, the color, etc.

Experiencing Paralyzing Cramps?
Heavy periods sometimes (but not always) can be accompanied by paralyzing cramps that may force you to skip work, school, hangout sessions, even traveling. If you’re experiencing cramps that force you to stay in bed curled up in a ball refusing to move – talk to your doctor.

Get Your Numbers Checked
Still concerned your period may be too heavy? Have your numbers checked! There are a variety of tests available your doctor can use to check your symptoms. Feeling super sluggish? Ask your doctor to test you for anemia. One of the more well known conditions is anemia – fortunately fairly easy to treat and test. Talk to your medical care professional if you’d like to be tested for anemia or other conditions.
